Jim Thorpe Tunnel is a railroad tunnel located in Carbon County, Pennsylvania, United States. The tunnel is approximately 2.5 miles long and was constructed in the early 1900s to connect the Lehigh Valley Railroad with the Mauch Chunk Switchback Gravity Railroad. It was named after Jim Thorpe, a Native American athlete, who won Olympic gold medals in the decathlon and pentathlon events in 1912. The tunnel was used for freight and passenger trains until the 1960s, after which it was closed for several years. In the 1980s, the tunnel was reopened for freight traffic and is currently owned by the Reading Blue Mountain and Northern Railroad. The tunnel is also used by hiking and biking enthusiasts who use the nearby Switchback Trail.
